2nd April 2019

To mark 10 years of collaboration, we are delighted to present the exhibition, ‘Facing Change’, capturing the real-life changes experienced by those who have been supported by projects funded through the Government of Ireland and Genio over the past decade.

The exhibition features 10 portraits of inspiring people from the four corners of Ireland, from a variety of backgrounds and across ages and genders. They have all been supported to overcome personal challenges related to mental health, disability, homelessness and dementia and to have more control over their own lives and live in the community.

The portraits were taken by Ruth Medjber whose work has been exhibited extensively in Ireland as well as Internationally. Genio commissioned Ruth for this exhibition due to her unique ability to capture individual personalities and stories within her portraits and for her person-centred and collaborative approach. She worked with each person to identify a location for the portrait that is meaningful to them and, where possible, provided them with a remote-controlled trigger which enabled them to have as much agency over the process as possible and take their own picture.

The exhibition will also feature 10 short films produced by Sam Whelan-Curtin and Fiona Murphy featuring individuals and families who share their personal experiences with disability, mental health and dementia.

To coincide with the exhibition we will also publish the learnings and impact from our collaboration with Government over the past ten years.

The exhibition is open to the public in the Gallery of Photography, Meeting House Square, Dublin 10th – 14th April 2019. It will then visit three regional locations throughout the rest of 2019 including Cork, Donegal and Westmeath.
