We are delighted to share a short film profiling the Living Well with Dementia (LWwD) project, supported by the HSE & Genio. The film was produced by the EVPA - European Venture Philanthropy Association, with support from the European Commission. The LWwD project was profiled as part of the EVPA's 'Success Stories' series, profiling successful, innovative solutions to social challenges across Europe.

The LWwD project was one of nine projects supported between 2012 - 2017 by the HSE & Genio Dementia Programme, to develop a range of services and supports that are determined by the needs and preferences of people with dementia - from early to more advanced and complex stages.

“The Living Well with Dementia project is an example of the potential that can be achieved when passionate leaders come together with a shared vision to bring about change. This project positively changed the infrastructure that existed within this community for people living with dementia, with plans underway to scale this personalised approach to a further 7 surrounding communities, and beyond.” Elaine Howard, Dementia Programme Manager, Genio

Dementia is one of the most prevalent chronic illnesses in the world. According to the World Health Organisation (2015), 47.5m people have dementia worldwide. It is projected to almost triple to 135.5m by 2050. In Ireland it has been estimated that around 55,000 people were suffering from dementia in 2016. It is expected to reach over 94,000 by 2031 (M. Pierce, S. Cahill & E. O’Shea, 2013).

We are working with government and philanthropy to meet the challenges in dementia through the HSE & Genio Dementia Programme. The aim of the programme is to ensure people with dementia continue to lead self-determined lives at home connected to their family, neighbours and community for as long as possible. The programme involves developing and testing a range of personalised, flexible and responsive supports and services. Personalising services means giving people what they need, when and where they need it putting the person at the heart of service design and delivery. This work is aligned with government policy and supported by The Atlantic Philanthropies.

Many thanks to everyone who generously gave their time and participated in filming.
